Historic The Maxwell-Stanford House, Yonge Street, Richmondhill, Ontario

Commercial | Instutional / Heritage

The Maxwell-Stanford House at 10039 Yonge Street, located in Richmond Hill, is a well-preserved example of mid-Victorian Gothic Revival cottage architecture. Built circa 1860, the 1 ½-storey frame house exhibits classic Gothic Revival features, such as a rectangular plan, medium-pitched side-gabled roof, and a central dormer. The building’s symmetrical front façade, with flat-headed windows and a central doorway, maintains its historic charm while showcasing the architectural elements of its era.

A significant restoration in 1977, led by the renowned heritage architect B. Napier Simpson, added a bell-cast roof portico, further enhancing the building’s historical significance. The house’s combination of historical integrity and sensitive restoration makes it an important architectural landmark in Richmond Hill.

This project is a testament to Ela Architects’ commitment to preserving and celebrating Ontario’s rich architectural heritage while integrating contemporary restoration methods.
